We've not been posting much on this blog lately, yeah. This blog serves us more like a website, showcasing our works, latest promo...

2011 has been an eventful year...
Looking back, we have made some good decisions, some we wish we hadn't made (!)...
But then again, life's like that isn't it?
We take in all the good with the not so good...

A whole lot of fun - we got to know her preferences, what she was like, as we wanted the shots to portray her, and shots of her that she's not even aware she's capable of doing! Babies and toddlers and fun to shoot. Though they can sometimes get mighty cheeky during their portrait sessions (trust us!), they challenge you to produce best shots under trying circumstances!

People often ask how to get the babies to look at the camera, or how to get them in a certain "baby portrait" position, or how long it takes to get them to sleep - to get those cute sleeping babies portraits...the answer - you never get a baby/toddler to do anything! They are the boss in the studio! Period!

It will help to make lots of preparation before the session so there are alternatives, in case the shot you want didn't happen the way you wanted it to...(which is quite often!). Some parents do request for certain cute "baby poses" they've seen over the internet (darn those internet images!) - we set expectations right, by letting them know that baby is BOSS! Sometimes, they may need to come back another day if baby is not in photo-taking mood....Yes, it takes a lot of patience, and most importantly, you've got to love babies! You can't get great portraits without that special connection with the little ones...

The Day I Became A Football Fan...

I'm not much of a football fan, but when Malaysia's celebrated goalkeeper, Khairul Fahmi came for a photoshoot, I was sold on the game! And even got tickets for Malaysia vs Pakistan match on 23Feb2011!!! Fahmi is such a great guy - so full of passion and charisma that easily rubs off to anyone he interacts with. No wonder he's where he is today. No wonder I'm sold on football now!

Happy 2011 everyone! A new year always mark a new beginning...whatever it is we want to start anew. We're not into this "new year resolution" thingy, cos life is never static, so the so-called resolutions almost always get re-visited, revised and re-everything else! What's important to us is to always value add to others through our work, always challenge self to produce the highest quality output we possibly can and most of all, always be thankful.

Weddings Over The Weekend

It's June already!!! 2010 still feel new to me! What happened to all those months?! Maybe 'cos we've been keeping ourselves busy with studio shoots, outdoor portraits, workshops and weddings! Ah! Weddings! End of May has been packed with weddings. I always love weddings, especially when we know the couple and the families so well.

HANY & IMAN
This is the wedding of Hany & Iman - marriage solemnised on May 27th. We had covered Hany's sister's (Nina & Azmir) wedding about 3 years ago (time sure flies). They're like family friends - well, they're Hokkien and speak pure Penang hokkien, which is exactly my dialect :)). Congrats to Hany & Iman on their marriage and we wish them lots of love in this next chapter of their lives.

ELY & LUDO
The moment they both have been waiting for...May 28th was their Akad Nikah (solemnisation) held in picturesque Cyberview Lodge Resort. Ludo's family from France (an entourage of about 30+ !) had flown specially in to witness this ceremony and share the couple's joy. (I forgot to ask if Ludo flew the plane himself, cos he's a pilot with Air France! Maybe I will later, if I remember!) Even as I'm tapping away on my keyboard, the families are now basking in the warm (hot) sun in Pulau Perhentian - yes, all 30+ of them are there now on holiday! Have fun, y'all!

Calling Aspiring/New Models : TOPCat MODEL ShootOut!!!

The hunt is on...for new and aspiring models. We're holding a Model ShootOut session in May 2010. Call or message us for appointment. You will receive more than just images. We'll share experiences with you - effective posing techniques, how to help your photographer get the images they want, using facial expressions and body language for powerful images, understanding lighting (yes, even for models!) and so much more!!!

FAQs about TOPCat MODEL ShootOut

1. I'm not exactly new, but can I join?
Sure you can. As long as you are open to learning, we welcome you. The modeling profession, like photography, is so dynamic that there's always new things to learn.

2. When is the ShootOut Session?
There will be a few in May 2010. Weekdays and weekends. Call in to make appointment. If we're full on that day, we are flexible on date and time, so just fix another date that is convenient for all.

3. Do I have to pay anything?
NO. We are not charging for this session because this specially catered for models who want to improve themselves. When models improve and gain more knowledge, it helps photographers. That is good enough for us.

4. What comes after this ShootOut Session?
We will include you in TOPCat Studio's NextTopModel List, which means that we will contact you for any future shoots, if you are available/interested.

5. Do I get paid for future shoots?
Yes, if we find that you have enough experience to model professionally.
Not yet, if we find that you still need exposure and guidance. Usually, by the 3rd shoot, you will already be paid a mutually agreed upon fee, unless you still need lots of guidance.

6. I hate being taken advantage of, and not being paid!

Of course. We hate that, too! As long as we agree upfront on the fees, or on whether the shoot is TFCD basis, it will be win-win for both.

7. Can we model for other photographers after this?
Of course you can. We encourage you to take on offers from other photographers for modeling assignments. That is how you can continue to grow professionally. Infact, we will recommend you to other studios who are in need of models. We leave it to you to discuss your fees with them.

8. Why is TOPCat Studio doing this for free?
Because we're good, generous, kind....(teeheehee...) and also because we find that there are many new models who want to be good, but have no proper direction and guidance. Good looks alone does not guarantee you a great future as a model. Most important is, we believe, to have a great POSITIVE attitude. When you have great attitude, you can take on anything. We like to impart these knowledge to you, because we can. We have been blessed in that we're able to pursue what what we are passionate about - it's time to give back. So you see, the best things in life ARE free...Furthermore, we also require fresh talents from time to time. So we do need to have a talented pool of models.

9. I have already done lots of shooting session with other photographers, should I have another one with TOPCat Studio?
Only you can answer that. Remember that with us, we will also impart knowledge on being a professional model.

10. Can I have my Modeling Portfolio done with TOPCat Studio?
Sure you can. It's important for you to be comfortable with the photographer who's doing your portfolio shoot. There must be trust and mutual understanding. If you find that in us after your ShootOut session, stick with us!

11. What else do you offer to models like us?
Besides tea and coffee...we plan to host mini learning sessions in future, specially for models. So you do need to be on our list....

What a BLAST it was last Saturday! Rained heavily at 2am...alhamdullilah, we were blessed with fine weather by the time we started gathering at 7.30am. A big "Thank You" to all participants and special thanks to Yana and Sofea for being our models for the day. All had great fun, and most important, beginners or not, see the images they produced at the end of the day!!! Unbelievable! Shooting using kit lenses, they learnt about shooting with a single light source, mixing daylight with flash (when it got cloudy), sculpting subjects with lights....so MUCH more!!!

Went to bed on 26th, praying hard for fine weather. Wuz raining cats and dogs that nite. Alhamdullilah, woke up to such fine weather! Participants to our Great Outdoor Portrait Workshop had such a great time learning, experimenting and having fun! Thanks everyone for your participation, and a gazillion thanks to our models, Sofea and Liyana who both had the toughest job of all - posing under the hot sun and looking cool under the sweltering heat! Enjoy the BTS pix!

Getting to know participants and their gear before the shoot and sharing key points about portraits with natural light. (Don't forget the principles for that 3D effect!)

Play with light. God is the greatest light artist. We just have to learn to see things differently to capture His creation.

(Used to be traffic police?? Hehe) Explaning the hows and whats of using reflectors. Remember - we're at the Equator.

The "L-L-D" technique (sendiri create punye) for participants to remember and adopt always! No more P-A-S method (Point And Shoot!).

Learn new techniques for creating great portraits. It's not all about technical knwoledge. A huge chunk is about composition, posing and flirting with light (yes, flirting encouraged here! Hahaha!)

Second shooting session - usage of props, creating more drama with and otherwise ordinary portraits. Ingat - work within your radius! You can have at least 6 different shots with the same pose!

Overcast days? Light too harsh? No problem! Re-direct - create own shades!

Great Outdoor Portraits workshops incorporate the hard part (technical know-hows) and the softer side of photography. Each participants are given more than enough time to create the images on their own.

GREAT Outdoor Portraits with Liyana

The weather was just great yesterday for us to do these portraits with the lovely Liyana. It was her first photoshoot with us, and we styled in various looks. We were outdoors first, then proceeded to the studio for more great shoots.

The pictures here are evidence that she looks amazing in each and every shot. The camera just loves her! Infact, we liked the raw shots so much that there's really minimal photoshop done, and one most of it, none done, except for cropping. Whatd'ya say to a cool gal who delivers these great moments each time you click...how about - "wanna do the shoot again?" Yes, Liyana will take part in our GREAT Outdoor Portraits Workshop this Saturday (27th March)! Can't wait! Meanwhile, just enjoy these fantastic moments....and drool...

Been soooo busy with family shoots, baby portraits and weddings for the first 2 months of 2010. Boy, time flies!!! We're into the third month of the year, CNY is over (!), the beginning of another set of hectic schedule and it's TOPCAT Stdio's 1st Anniversary!!! Melaka is always one of our favourites for wedding shoots, or any shoot for that matter. Nostalgic settings, historical sites and all remind me of my hometown Penang. This time we had the privillege of shooting some wedding portraits in Kampung Morten - to be exact at Villa Sentosa.

Villa Sentosa is is a Malay living museum, a beautiful 1920's Malay house built along Melaka River - a popular tourist attraction. You can now see why...

Seated on this original 1920's bed.

The picture frames and all the clippings on the wall will shed light on this historical wonder. Over here, walls do speak!Look at all the antiques around and the old LPs on the wall behind.

This was taken just outside their home in Melaka, right after the wedding.

We had Farshad and his lovely family over to our studio just a few days ago. All from Canada, they currently reside and work here. Mahsa, the mummy, is big on keeping the tradition of having their children's growing up years documented. So we took lots and lots of fun pictures with them.

GHIONIS In KL - What Can One Person Do

He's got class, he's got style. He brims with ideas, he's undisputedly a huge influence to photographers today. And he's got such a big heart. He's Jerry Ghionis - and what an experience it was to watch him in action - here in KL!

Truly a master at what he does, Jerry pours his heart out when relating his style, his approach and his thought process to us. He's so generous in sharing - and he even got the hotel to extend his time with us! Both of us are very much drawn to his refreshing approach in photography, but the one thing that we truly believe makes him stand out so vividly is his genuine love for people - his openness, sincerity and candid style.

We've learnt so much from this one person in one day that it felt like we've been here 5 days! We can't wait for him to bring his workshop to Malaysia next year. As photographers, we're always learning new ways to do things. It's such a dynamic profession that you'll find that you've just got places to move on to, even when you think you're "there". (Is this making sense at all? I can't find a better way to say it!)

We love photography - we love the art of capturing emotions, seeing lines and shadows that tell a story and Jerry's taught us many different ways to make MAGIC happen when we see the world through the lens.

"WHAT CAN ONE PERSON DO." It's amazing what God has given us. A heart to feel and to care. That love that the ONE person carry will go a long, long way! He talks with passion about his Cambodian project. He'll be dedicating his gift of photography to make a difference to the orphanages in Cambodia. As he advocates (from his blog) - "you can't save the world with one photograph, but you can change the world one photograph at a time." (wipe your tears...)

This valuable lesson - "what can one person do" - is permanently etched in our hearts and minds.

Jerry's got great humour!

Malaysia has a pool of talented photographers. We need to value our craft more and respect the work we do day in and day out. It's not about being out there to knock competitions down with dollars and cents. We've truly lost our values, if this is all we've been doing. It's about raising the industry standard. "A journey of a thousand miles begin with one step."

What can one person do.

It starts with the "man in the mirror" - stand UP and be counted.

Talk no more - just DO it!!!

Our One2One Studio Lighting Session at TOPCAT Studio started about a month ago - phew! Finally got it going 6 months after officially opening our studio, and finally got to post some behind the scenes here. The good news is that more and more photographers are enquiring and coming on board to hone their skills in glamour and portraiture lighting. That shows their seriousness and commitment, and most of all their love for photography. It's been a wonderful journey - sharing and exchanging experiences/know-hows with all of them. WE'VE COME ACROSS nervous mums-to-be about having their very own INTIMATE pregnancy portraiture taken and have been asked a variety of questions that we’ve decided to compile them. Read on, they might sound familiar to you! (Images here were recently shot at our studio Topcat - privacy of client maintained)

1. HELP - I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE SHOWING OFF MY BELLY BUT I DO WANT THOSE INTIMATE SHOTS I ALWAYS SEE!
Dear Mums – Nurul is the principal photographer for pregnancy portraits. There will only be the 2 of us (Nurul & Suhaimi) in the studio together with your partner. Portraits are professionally taken in our very own comfortable and private space so there’s no need to worry about sudden intrusion from outsiders because the whole place is secured and not shared with anyone else. If you prefer only female presence, then Nurul will personally handle the shots.

2. I AM EMBARASSED BY MY STRETCH MARKS AND CERTAINLY CAN'T DO ANY PREGNANCY PORTRAITS WITH THEM!
YES, YOU CAN! With creative lighting arrangements, shooting angles or use of props, you won't notice too much of those stretch marks. So, not to worry!

3. I’M NOT GOOD AT POSING AT ALL - WHAT MORE NOW THAT I'M PREGNANT!
You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll enjoy the session! This is a moment of bonding between you two (or 3!). There will be no “stiff acrobatic poses”! Just take on our directions as we use body language between couples, to effectively capture the quiet and intimate moments. Our focus is to achieve portraits that strongly depict the love between you, your partner and your baby.

4. MY PARTNER IS NOT COMFORTABLE WITH ME BARING MY BELLY.
You can have equally meaningful and intimate shots without having to bare your belly. It is just an option for couples. So don’t worry – you too will have memorable shots.

5. WHAT DO I WEAR FOR THE SHOOT? I DON'T HAVE THAT MANY MATERNITY CLOTHES.
Keep your portraits timeless and simple - there’s no need to bring colourful clothes or use accessories. Just simple black and white blouse/long skirts will do. We do not want distracting colours to steal the limelight from those emotional moments. Lightings will be used effectively to create shadows, accentuate features and produce moody, artistic and powerful images. Additional materials will be provided for you to wear or drape around during the shoot.

6. I HAVE 2 OTHER CHILDREN. CAN THEY COME, TOO?
Of course! This is a family affair. Involving your children in the portrait is a great way to prepare them in welcoming the new addition to the family. You will also be more comfortable with them around. Hug them, kiss them, or let them touch your belly – we’ll do the rest!

7. OKAY - COUNT ME IN! SO WHAT ARE THE DO's & DON'Ts I NEED TO KNOW BEFORE THE SHOOT?

In preparation for the shoot, apply light makeup and DO have your hair done to counter bad hair days and fly-aways during the shoot! You CAN be glamorous and pregnant at the same time! When you look good, you'll feel good. And when you feel good, you'll enjoy being photographed!
Wear lose clothings the day before and even on the day itself. This is to avoid those wrinkly marks on your skin caused by your clothings/undergarments.
If you are bringing along smaller children, it would be good to have someone close who can attend to them while you and your partner are involved in the shoot;
Let us know beforehand the type of photography/poses you are both comfortable with. This will enable us to do our homework and be prepared to direct the shoot within the confines of your preferences.
Have a good rest the night before so you can totally enjoy the shoot and savour every moment of being a glamorous Mum!
Do allow at least 2 hours - this includes small breaks in between so that you can have a relaxing and well-paced session. The best is not to time your other appointments too closely on this day to avoid all incoming phone calls and stress. This is your time together - a new kind of experience - we want you to enjoy it!
Images taken will be posted to a private site where only you will have access to view them and then make your selections;
Images given are in medium resolution - rights reserved, but will not be used for commercial purposes.

SARAKids Mini OPEN Day & Bday Celebration

Sunday, 28th June 09 - this was one photo shoot we all look forward to. For one thing, it was just 3 minutes from home! and it involved children - I love taking pictures of families and children. This was Sara Kids' Mini Open Day plus a grand birthday celebration for Puteri Sara Azalea, Farah (owner)'s daughter. It turned out to be more than that - was like a carnival with a lot of stalls set up by online business owners mainly bringing with them baby clothes and accesories for mums and dads.

A month to remember. For us. Loss of a loved one. We took a month long break from photography. I've reserved that last day of June to make this entry.

We've been pretty busy this month, with photo shoots of birthdays, weddings, annivesaries, and making trips to and fro to see our loved ones. Travelling time is thinking time. 2000 (over) km of travels = lots of time to reflect. Cut the long story short - Treasure every living moment. Complement, not compete. Stay true. You're probably wondering what these ramblings are all about. It's sunscreen.

EVERYBODY'S Free (To Wear Sunscreen)
If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it.

The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proven by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth. Oh, never mind. You will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years, you'll look back at photos of yourself and recall in a way you can't grasp now how much possibility lay before you and how fabulous you really looked. You are not as fat as you imagine.
Don't worry about the future. Or worry, but know that worrying is as effective as trying to solve an algebra equation by chewing bubble gum. The real troubles in your life are apt to be things that never crossed your worried mind, the kind that blindside you at 4 p.m. on some idle Tuesday.
Do one thing every day that scares you.
Sing.
Don't be reckless with other people's hearts. Don't put up with people who are reckless with yours.
Floss.
Don't waste your time on jealousy. Sometimes you're ahead, sometimes you're behind. The race is long and, in the end, IT'S ONLY WITH YOURSELF.
Remember compliments you receive. Forget the insults. If you succeed in doing this, tell me how.
Keep your old love letters. Throw away your old bank statements.
Stretch.
Don't feel guilty if you don't know what you want to do with your life. The most interesting people I know didn't know at 22 what they wanted to do with their lives. Some of the most interesting 40-year-olds I know still don't.
Get plenty of calcium. Be kind to your knees. You'll miss them when they're gone.
Maybe you'll marry, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll have children, maybe you won't. Maybe you'll divorce at 40, maybe you'll dance the funky chicken on your 75th wedding anniversary. Whatever you do, don't congratulate yourself too much, or berate yourself either. Your choices are half chance. So are everybody else's.
Enjoy your body. Use it every way you can. Don't be afraid of it or of what other people think of it. It's the greatest instrument you'll ever own.
Dance, even if you have nowhere to do it but your living room.
Read the directions, even if you don't follow them.
Do not read beauty magazines. They will only make you feel ugly.
Get to know your parents. You never know when they'll be gone for good. Be nice to your siblings. They're your best link to your past and the people most likely to stick with you in the future.
Understand that friends come and go, but with a precious few you should hold on. Work hard to bridge the gaps in geography and lifestyle, because the older you get, the more you need the people who knew you when you were young.

Accept certain inalienable truths: Prices will rise. Politicians will philander. You, too, will get old. And when you do, you'll fantasize that when you were young, prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders.
Respect your elders.
Don't expect anyone else to support you. Maybe you have a trust fund. Maybe you'll have a wealthy spouse. But you never know when either one might run out.
Don't mess too much with your hair or by the time you're 40 it will look 85.
Be careful whose advice you buy, but be patient with those who supply it. Advice is a form of nostalgia. Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.
But trust me on the sunscreen.

Azman & Nasreen - One Special Day

Nasreen & Azman tied the knot just last week (30th April) amidst this very elaborate and elegant settings at the bride's home. The very much in love couple finally became husband and wife at about 6.15pm.
Surrounded by very close friends and relatives, they had all the love they need to go through what some would call a nerve wrecking moment! The script that says it all and changed it all...

Couple of The Year - Adilah & Rizal!

We voted them the Couple of The Year! They're both so charming, so loving, so cool and sporting! Having been with them for 2 days covering their Akad Nikah and Persandingan, we were amazed at how calm and collected they were, despite the hectic preparation for their big day. Rizal and family, were amazingly punctual (and we mean right on the dot kind of punctuality!) at both events, and everything went on so smoothly, Alhamdullilah. We had so much fun taking their pictures!

Even after about 6 hours of shooting, we were so charged up when we left for another wedding shoot that same day itself. We just had to tell them that they are, to us, indeed the couple of the year! Dr Rizal and Mum!

It's been a very hectic past few weeks for us here! Nevertheless, after some 72 hours of sleep (!!@#!), we'll going to post some of the images taken from weddings, engagements, birthdays, etc etc from April to early May. Start off with Jun's engagement photos. Jun's a bubbly and sweet girl - anyone who meets her will surely be affected by her infectious smile and loving character. She's not seen our work, but we met at her cousin's wedding and since then, she's been wanting us to cover her engagement. We're so humbled by that, and glad we were there to see her and Danial (very shy young man) get engaged in a simple, yet elegant ceremony.

In a family dominated by ladies, Danial's gonna be the centre of attention alright! Congrats you two - and we wish you every happiness as you plan for your wedding next year!

Baby Sophie's 1st!

We were caught by surprise yesterday morning when Nash gave a call asking if we could capture his baby daughter's birthday celebration in PJ. We asked "when?" and he said, "today!". We just got out of bed having slept only at 3am the night before working at the studio! How could we say no to him - being his baby girl's 1st birthday! So after reschedulling 2 appointments, we had all batteries charged up and quickly headed for A&W PJ (well, actually after banana leaf rice at Rajoo's in Jalan Gasing!).
We first met Nash and Fisya in 2007 (if I remember correctly!) when we did their wedding. It's a great, great feeling seeing our clients, now friends, moving from being single, to marrried, and then becoming parents. (It's also a sign that we're getting older...). It's even more fantastic (and an honour) to be remembered and asked to photograph their happy occasion. Thank you, Nash & Fisya. We had a great time, too.

1st Wedding at Kellie's Castle - Marlin & Arieff

Who would've thought that the management would allow a huge wedding party to be held at this historic and beautiful place. Only Marlin could pull this off when she managed to convince everyone to agree to her idea!

This classic beauty is another one of Marlin's surprise - both arrived in this 1962 vintage car (proudly driven in by owner Mr Veloo). Mesmerized by the whole idea, crowds of people gathered around the castle throughout the whole day to have their pictures taken!

Last week, this charming couple did some shots with their little bundle of joy, Zhafir! Turned out that this was a surprise family shoot Fara had planned for Azhar and Zhafir. Not knowing where Fara wanted to take them right after dinner, they just followed Fara and before they know it, all 3 were in front of the camera! Cool trick, Fara! Lucky for you, Azhar, it was a pleasant surprise for the whole family!

Lyana & Amir - Rendezvous Hotel & Post Wedding Outdoor Shoot

After the reception (hardly able to keep their eyes open!), the bride and groom graciously obliged to a few portrait shots before calling it a night!

We're gonna be seeing Amir & Lyana this weekend at Dewan Perdana when Amir's family host the reception here in KL.

Here are some shots done a day after their wedding. We only had a few hours to shoot before continuing our drive back to KL, so there was no chance of waiting for the perfect lighting - boy, did we endure the midday sun with a temperature that felt like boiling point!

Our patience finally paid off when the paths were cleared of people taking Sunday strolls. With only a few seconds of clearance we got the shot without anyone peering from behind!

Right after this shot was taken, we all headed for the ice cream man parked nearby for some cooling down!

1. John & Fern - This was a fun-filled 3-day non-stop video shoot in Langkawi, Four Seasons Resort which we did together with Jim Liaw (MPA) and Ning. Jim captured the winning shots while we put together for John & Fern their "making of" video. The entire video was about 20 minutes, so we've clipped off some shots leaving about 4-5 minutes here for easy viewing.
